The bar is down a creepy hallway. Drinks were cheap and not to bad but the food was disgusting.

It is rare one is so simply upset by a food experience that they sign up for a yelp account to warn others away. This is one of those occasions. Tucked away in the mini mall in the quaint lite town of northeast lies this little gem. After numerous u-turns after missing the sign(which by the way is slightly bigger then a dinner plate I arrived at the pickled herring. My first impression was of a Picasso painting. It looked good from far away but up close it was a disaster. While walking in my first observation was the industrial construction fan on the dance floor circulating the air. This was to provide support for the two aged wall air conditioning units which began to fail as more then three people entered the bar. The bar was half full and our party of seven sat down. The atmosphere was dark and we noticed they allow sharpie graffiti. Nothing better then having dinner and reading about Betty's oral skills or pictures of phalli everywhere in grim detail. The bartender was responsible for the bar and the tables which isn't ideal. He was nice and reasonably quick but had zero personality. When we asked for a menu he told us the kitchen was backed up and it would take awhile. We observed 4 other people at the bar and decided to go the appetizer route and eat dinner elsewhere. As our 7 appetizers trickled out 1 at a time over the next 75 minutes we were unable to go elsewhere as everything in town foodwise shuts down at 10. This food experience was one of the worst I have ever had. And please let me preface this by saying that I am in the hospitality industry and typically give most places the benefit of the doubt. They were out of several menu items and we were told this after our order had been in for 25 minutes. Every single item was burned deep brown to black and served in tinfoil wrapped plastic baskets. The handcut fries were burnt and topped with rock hard bacon bits and browned cheddar cheese. Crab balls were black and unseasoned. The only flavor on the nachos was the lettuce. Wings were fried to a jerky like consistency. Another odd fact was that every drink ordered came in a different type of glass. This may be kitchsy and cute at a home grown Italian place but I'd rather not drink my beer out of a water chalice or a martini out of a champagne flute. All in all really disappointed. This place wants to capture the New Orleans experience and fails miserably. New Orleans bars are gross because the buildings are hundreds of years old and simply Cant be fixed. This building is nowhere near it and they go for the dump look. If your looking to grab a cold drink while sightseeing in northeast or catching a live band I think this would be an ok spot. But by god don't eat here. I'll end with this. If the owner is reading this please order more pint glasses and teach the cook to take a little pride in what he serves. Make the menu smaller but make sure those limited offerings are always good.

I've been to the Pickled Herring Pub about three times. I had the spicy Tilapia Bites which were incredibly tasty and priced well. They are very generous with their servings of wine which works for me!! There are all different types of music that can be heard in this club. The only thing I would change is one of the bartenders wasn't as friendly as the rest. I plan on going back many many times and STRONGLY recommend this place!!!

This is a great example of don't judge a book by its cover. We walked in and nearly walked back out. A local convinced us to give it a try. I have to say the meal was one of the best we've had on this trip. I had the French dip and my husband had the sirloin. The meal was excellent and the portion was more than enough. We had the tilapia bites as an appetizer and they were amazing! We liked it so much we are going back for lunch today before heading back home. I give it a 4 out of 5. The food was excellent. The scenery not so much.

This bar is unlike many I've ever seen. First off, it is down this awesome hidden side alley street. Perhaps because I was visiting the area and it was all unfamiliar to me, I found it as a pretty intriguing "speak easy" feel. We found this place walking along the strip after dinner. We heard their live music playing from the main strip and the gate we stopped at to turn down was closed. My boyfriend jimmied it for a bit and got it open and to our surprise were street lamps with doors to pool tables, live music, chill bartenders and one hell of a house brewed ale. The bartenders were really laid back chicks. We were there pretty earlier but they seemed to be very good with their customers as they strolled in and with us. They let us try their house ale, honestly I need to find it in the NJ area cuz it was that good. The place was so chill and had such good vibes, my boyfriend and I booked a trip back to north east Maryland in sept. We will be hitting a vineyard and then ending the night here. Can't wait to go back. Super cool place. I hope they got more of a crowd as the night went on as we left a bit early. I'll be able to update you all and let you know if the crowd picks up later in the night come September. Either way, check this place out, hidden gem for sure.

There were few tables, so we ate at the bar. We obviously annoyed the bartender by interrupting her conversation with the regulars. The food, however, was good. The Maryland crab soup was some of the best I've had and the rock fish appetizer was decent. My wife's crab cake sandwich also past muster. They had a blues jam later that night, but we decided to eat elsewhere for dinner.

Drove up here from APG, not too far. Only one side was open when we got there for dinner around 7:30pm. The place is pretty small with 4-top tables which we squeezed 6 people at. We ate typical bar food, fried everything and delicious. The band came around 8:30pm or 9pm. They were pretty good, a few older people were dancing but we didn't get into it like that. The crowd here is older. We went over to the other side of the hall to the other side of the bar where it was quieter and we could hear each other speaking. I guess they moved the pool tables out, so now there is just a ghetto dart board for your entertainment.

we did not enjoy ourselves, the service or the food. Service was slow, food was overcooked, greasy and grossly under seasoned. Our waitress who was also the bartender was not very nice and not accommodating at all. Needs more staff on the floor. Too much for 1 person to do the both the bar tending and waiting tables. Thought I would die at the red solo cups for your drinks and paper plates for entree. I should have been in a crab place for these items. Looked like it would be a nice place to eat with as nice as it appeared. We will NOT be back and will not recommend this place.

The Pickled Herring Pub is always a good time in North East, when they're open. It's a nice little jazz bar that has limited hours depending on the time of the year. Honestly, I don't know what their hours and open days are, but it's typically at least thursday/friday/saturday nights. There is usually a musical performer, typically some sort of jazz. Lots of people always having a good time in there, and it's in the back some some strange little street merchant area, with some overflow seating/tables for if you don't like the music, or want to have a conversation. Definitely an important stop in any pub crawl through North East, and at least worth one stop in. 4 stars instead of 5 due to not being open every day all year round.

This place really sucks. I have never waited so long for dinner. My husband and I went expecting a great dinner but instead waited an hour and decided to cancel it after watching the girl behind the bar do two shots with her friends. She also lets us know after a half hour that they were out of the rock fish bites. Everyone else was getting food but us. I don't think she even put the order in which was fish and chips an crab cake. I don't think that should take an hour. It wasn't even crowded. Our friends band Stone Groove was excellent though. Never will go back!!!!!!

We just got back from a nice motorcycle ride all day and decided to stop in for a few cold ones, and I'm glad we did. I've been here at least a dozen time and as usual, they provided great entertainment. But I must say, tonight's band the WitchDoctors was probably one of the best I've heard this year. They really put lot of heart and soul into their music. They had the crowd dancing from the very beginning to the very end. If you would like to hear them play, you can contact them through e-mail: boxturtlebob@dishmail.net . Back to the Pickled Herring, my only complaint is that it took too long to get my nachos and fries. I would definitely recommend this establishment for a good time.
